Sony Pumps Up Trophy Levels/My Ego With Ranking Revamp

If you’ve fired up your PlayStation in the last few days, you may have noticed a monumental leap in your Trophy score, and no it’s not because you have started sleep-Platinuming your games. Announced earlier in the week, Sony has re-jigged their Trophy system with the Trophy level range changing from “1-100” “to “1-999”, as part of the company’s transition into next-gen, with the PlayStation 5 just around the corner. Player’s existing Trophy scores have therefore been re-calculated, resulting in a much higher ranking, with the new figure based on the number and grades of trophies you’ve already acquired. Even a scrub like me is now sitting at a comfortable Trophy level of 214!

Josh is at level 440, but let’s not talk about that.

I’m trying

Along with the new ranking range, Sony has rolled out a few other changes to the Trophy system as outlined by product manager Toshimasa Aoki, on the PlayStation Blog.

“We’ve implemented a new Trophies level calculation system that is more optimized and rewarding. Players will progress quicker through the early levels, and levels will increase more consistently. Platinum trophies will count more toward your level progression, making them even more valuable”.

“With an expanded level range, we’re also updating the trophy level icon on PlayStation 5, as well as PlayStation App at a later date. Currently, the Trophies icon is just a single gold star, but we’re adding a few variants:

  • Bronze: levels 1-299
  • Silver: levels 300 – 599
  • Gold: levels 600 – 998
  • Platinum: level 999

The icons will also have a subtle distinction to visually suggest how close you are to the next level. Lastly, just for clarity, Trophies that you’ve earned on previous PlayStation systems will come with you to PlayStation 5, just as they have in previous generation transitions. The new Trophy levels will be reflected in all locations that Trophy levels are shown, including past systems, PS App and My PlayStation“.

Though not a massive Trophy hunter myself, these changes certainly make the idea of going back and clearing some of the near-Platinumed games sitting in my library a tempting option. I want that high score, dammit! The new changes are now live worldwide, so go pop on your console and enjoy a pleasant surprise.
