The Monster Hunter Movie Gets A New Trailer And 2020 Gets A Little Worse

After spending years in development hell, the Monster Hunter film finally has a trailer, and it looks to continue the tradition of dumpster-fire video game film adaptations. Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, best known for 1995’s Mortal Kombat and the Resident Evil film franchise (make of that what you will), the film will follow Milla Jovovich, Tony Jaa and Ron Perlman as they hunt monsters, I guess? Judging from the footage we have seen, the film seems very much detached from the source material, so who knows what the hell we are going to get?

In the newest trailer, we see a group of soldiers stuck in the middle of the desert ambushed by a Black Diablos. They then use traditional Monster Hunter weapons such as the Insect Glaive and Great Sword to take the beast on. Oh sorry, my mistake, I just assumed a Monster Hunter film would be more…Monster Hunter-y? Instead, we see them use traditional Monster Hunter weapons such as Humvees and assault rifles? Sure, whatever. One soldier closes his scope eye while firing a sniper rifle. How the fuck did this film cost $60 million to make?!

Look, I am having trouble putting my exact feelings into words, so check out the trailer below and experience the ennui that I felt when I first saw it.

The film will be available ‘only in cinemas’ this December, pushed forward from the initial 2021 release date. I would certainly suggest avoiding cinemas for the foreseeable future for obvious reasons, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this comes to streaming services pretty quickly. Fingers crossed for a so-bad-it’s-good situation at least.
