Farmville Is Dead, Long Live Farmville

Pour One Out

As if this year hasn’t taken enough already, Zynga has announced that following 11 years of annoying notifications, Farmville will no longer be available on Facebook from December 31, 2020. The game’s removal is due to Facebook dropping Flash game support in 2021.

Many people won’t remember Farmville fondly. The game dominated Facebook newsfeeds when it first launched in 2009, fuelling a constant wave of notifications from Boomer relatives and friends-of-friends-of-friends all desperate to upgrade their farmstead. Users had to wait days to claim their fields of okra and corn, which pushed many farmers to spend real-world money to speed up the process. It was a forebearer to the hideous pay-to-win future we now live in. However, I would farm a million fields of cabbage to go back to a time when my biggest concern was the placement of a stupid tractor on my stupid farm. It was a simpler time.

Goodbye, Farmville, you will be missed.

Farmville will be survived by his wife, FarmVille 2 and their soon to arrive daughter, FarmVille 3 (coming to mobile).
